Overcoming the obstacles of the ASE: vital support for young people

35% of homeless people aged 18 to 24 leave the ASE.

Over and above their often chaotic family situation, young people in the Aide Sociale à l’Enfance (ASE) system face a host of difficulties that constitute additional obstacles to their future social and professional lives. These obstacles can relate to their schooling (delays, dropping out), their professional integration (sudden orientation, lack of preparation for the job search), and much more.

In the absence of satisfactory professional integration and the lack of social safety nets (friends, family, etc.) to fall back on, many young people from the ASE are faced with serious exclusion when they leave. In this respect, statistics on homelessness are revealing: 25% of homeless people have passed through the ASE, and this figure rises to 35% for 18-24 year-olds.

But it doesn’t have to be a fatality.

Thanks to Break Poverty’s Digital inclusion drive program, more than 700 young people from the ASE have been supported in 2022-2023, via access to mentoring and digital workshops.
