30 Aug 2024 Break Poverty joins forces with a group of associations to support families and children affected by the war in Ukraine
Break Poverty Foundation and Agence du Don en Nature, in partnership with the NGO Première Urgence Internationale, are mobilizing in Ukraine and France to support families and children affected by the conflict.
Over 18 million people in need of emergency aid
Overnight, war has plunged tens of millions of Ukrainians into horror, as they live in pain and survive in ruins.
In Ukraine, more than 15.7 million people and 3 million children[1] are in need of vital emergency aid; access to water has been made difficult, and health services function poorly due to incessant bombardments and staff who have fled. Hospitals and maternity wards are running low on essential supplies. The situation has become so critical that 6.6 million people have fled their country[2], including more than 2.5 million children[3]. Every second that passes, one in two Ukrainian children becomes a refugee[4].
In France, nearly 60,000 Ukrainians have already been welcomed to date[5]. Thousands of Ukrainian families arrive with their children, destitute, having left behind many of their loved ones. They lack everything; their needs are immense, especially for their children: milk, baby food, diapers, liniment, cribs, bottles, clothes, strollers, blankets and so on.
To help families affected by the conflict, Break Poverty Foundation has mobilized in France and Ukraine, in partnership with several key associations, to respond urgently to their needs: Première Urgence Internationale, l’Agence du Don en Nature, Emmaus Solidarité & l’Armée du Salut.
Our response in Ukraine and France
UKRAINE
The priority in Ukraine is to deliver emergency food aid and non-food items to the victims of the conflict, particularly children and their mothers. Although humanitarian access inside Ukraine is restricted and particularly difficult, it is still possible to act within the country’s borders. Our partner, the NGO Première Urgence Internationale (PUI), has been operating in the country for 7 years, facilitating access to healthcare for populations in conflict zones.
Thanks to the financial support of companies and foundations, PUI has been able to strengthen its operations in order to respond urgently to the needs of the most vulnerable populations in the very heart of Ukraine, by deploying a new storage, repackaging and shipping warehouse at its rear base on the Polish border. This warehouse now enables us to deliver essential food and hygiene products to Ukraine as quickly as possible.
FRANCE
Break Poverty Foundation and Agence du Don en Nature, with the support of the Secrétariat à la Protection de l’Enfance et des Familles, have sent essential baby hygiene, care and food products, as well as childcare products, to Ukrainian refugee reception centers in France. These families are hosted by refugee associations in the Ile-de-France region. These organizations have been able to inform us of the families’ product needs and distribute them as efficiently as possible.
Nearly 200,000 products distributed in an emergency
Thanks to the commitment of numerous companies and foundations, more than 160,00 products were distributed, the equivalent of 10 trucks[6], for a total value of almost €500,000 [7].
These include over 30,000 baby food products (baby food jars, infant milk), over 30,000 hygiene products (shampoo, shower gel, baby cleansing creams), and 100,000 children’s items (pacifiers, rattle, changing bags, etc.).
